The Durban July is a race that grips a nation on the first Saturday of every July and millions are bet on the outcome.

With a purse of R3.5 million for 2014, it is easily Africa's richest race and public interest grows from an early stage reaching a crescendo on raceday, which this year will be on Saturday 5 July.

On that date, over £50,000 racegoers will pack Greyville Racecourse near Durban for a truly magical day consisting of 12 mega-rich races, and finding the winner of the big race is their prerogative.

The action gets under way at 11h35 and the betting outlets on course and around the country are sure to be busy, with queues likely right up to race time, 16h20. It is advised to get your bets on early to avoid disappointment.

Of course, some of you will prefer to wait until the July Durban gallops, that are this year scheduled for Thursday 27 June, The gallops are a traditional and popular feature of the race and allow the public a final chance to see all the runners in action before the big day.

A panel of experts will analyse the gallops and they will have a significant bearing on the betting for the Greyville spectacular.
