All eyes will be on the Durban July on Saturday and Legal Eagle is strongly fancied to win the famous contest.
The market for South Africa’s most famous race has been dominated by Legal Eagle (Sean Tarry/Anton Marcus) ever since the SA Derby winner powered to victory in the Jubilee Handicap at Turffontein three weeks ago. He gave weight to his rivals in the race and was raised a stone for his taking display.
He now gets into the Durban July with 9lb in hand and Tarry explained: “He surprised me in the Jubilee, not that he won but by the way that he won. His prep has gone very well. He had a lovely gallop last week and he has come through it well.”
Tarry will be looking for a third Durban July success in four seasons and also saddles four other horses in the Grade One. Legal Eagle aside, his shortest priced runner is French Navy (7-1), who will be ridden by Raymond Danielson.
Speaking about his chances, Tarry continued: “He is a tough horse who copes with everything. His weight for a horse that has won two Grade 1s is fair.”
Meanwhile, Mike de Kock is bidding for his fifth July win with Cape Fillies Guineas winner Majmu and SA Oaks winner Pine Princess (Warren Kennedy).
He said: “Both of them are in pretty good form. Majmu runs very well fresh and Pine Princess has shown that she can run with the best of them.”
