2018 Durban July confirmed runners – Oh Susanna tops high-quality list of entries

A wonderful view of the runners in the Durban July.

The initial entries for South Africa’s biggest handicap have been revealed, with Justin Snaith’s Oh Susanna topping the list of 69 entrants.

Snaith’s four-year-old filly has made a successful step up from sprinting to one milers over recent months, claiming a strong victory at Kenilworth before heading into the Sun Met. Last year’s Durban July winner, Marinarseco was expected to claim victory, but Oh Susanna produced a stunning display to become the first three-year-old filly in over a century to score in that historic contest.

It’s been four years since Legislate handed Snaith his one and only victory in his lucrative handicap and the 2014 winner will accompany stablemate Oh Susanna in the final field. Elusive Silva and Do It Again also feature on the current list of entries, as Snaith looks likely to head to Greyville mob-handed.

Glen Kotzen has also only managed to claim one victory in the Durban July down the years and he will be hoping Gold Standard can bounce back after a poor showing in the Sun Met. Lady In Black finished a close second to Oh Susanna when they clashed in the Cartier Paddock Stakes and Dennis Drier will be confident his filly can turn the tables on the favourite.

Other notable entries include Brett Crawford’s Rabada, Deo Juvente for Geoff Woodruff’s stable and Nother Russia, who will be out to try and hand Mike de Kock a fifth victory in South Africa’s most famous race.
